Alocasia Frydek 'Tattoo'

A rare mutant cultivar of Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek' — the Green Velvet Alocasia — that takes the already striking dark velvety arrow-shaped leaves and bold white venation of the standard Frydek and adds an additional layer of character that makes each individual plant a genuinely unrepeatable object. Also circulating under the name 'Emerald Tide', this cultivar is distinguished by markings that give the "tattooed" effect its name references: irregular, unpredictable silvery-grey to creamy white streaks, mottled patches, and ink-like markings that overlay the deep emerald-green velvety leaf surface, with no two leaves ever producing the same pattern. In its most textural expression, the mutation also produces deeply undulating, ruffled leaf margins and an embossed, uneven surface that gives the foliage a sculpted, three-dimensional quality beyond the flat velvet of standard Frydek — with distinctive additional patterning and mottling appearing on the abaxial leaf underside at maturity, the feature from which the 'Tattoo' name most directly derives. The bold white primary venation characteristic of the Frydek parent remains fully intact and contrasts against both the dark emerald ground and the irregular pale markings simultaneously, creating a leaf with multiple overlapping layers of visual interest. Compact in habit, reaching 40-60cm indoors, and propagated through tissue culture to maintain the mutation — making established plants significantly more accessible than chimeric variegated aroids while remaining genuinely rare in the collector market.

Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the deepest leaf coloration, the most vivid venation contrast, and the best expression of the tattoo markings — insufficient light causes progressive fading of both the dark green ground and the pale overlay markings. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist in a well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; as a rhizomatous alocasia it is highly susceptible to root rot and requires excellent drainage. Humidity of 60-70% supports the best velvet texture and cleanest leaf emergence; cool temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy, from which the plant reliably recovers when conditions improve. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
