Alocasia Jacklyn
Alocasia tandurusa 'Jacklyn'

A striking species from Sulawesi, Indonesia — relatively recently introduced to cultivation and quickly established as a collector favorite for its dramatic, architecturally distinct foliage. The leaves are upright, arrow-shaped, and deeply sinuate with strongly lobed margins, dark green with conspicuously bleeding dark veins, carried on distinctive fuzzy, purple-striped petioles. Sometimes traded under the name Alocasia sulawesi. Subject to the dormancy behavior typical of the genus, recovering reliably when conditions improve.

  • Light: Bright indirect light maintains the deepest leaf coloration and most vigorous growth; avoid direct sun which scorches the foliage.

  • Soil: Well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; as a rhizomatous alocasia it is highly susceptible to root rot — excellent drainage is non-negotiable.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool temperatures below 60°F trigger dormancy. Humidity of 60-80% supports the best growth and cleanest leaf emergence.

  • Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; keep lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the primary cultivation failure with this species.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy.
