Alocasia macrorrhiza 'Stingray'

A distinctive cultivar of Alocasia macrorrhiza named for its uniquely shaped leaves — broad, upward-curving blades that taper into a long, narrow, curling tail, giving each leaf the silhouette of a stingray in motion. The glossy green leaves are carried on upright petioles with subtle zebra-like banding at the base. An upright grower that can reach substantial size at maturity; subject to the dormancy typical of the genus, recovering reliably when conditions improve.

• Light: Bright indirect light maintains the strongest leaf form and most vigorous growth; tolerates some gentle direct sun once acclimated. Avoid harsh midday sun which scorches the leaves.

• Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration are essential — root rot is the primary cultivation failure. Never waterlogged.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool below 60°F can trigger dormancy. Humidity of 60%+ supports the best growth, though it tolerates average household humidity reasonably well.

• Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; keep lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the primary cultivation failure — when in doubt, underwater.

• Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; a heavy feeder when actively growing. Reduce or stop during dormancy.
