Alocasia Zebrina

A striking species native to the rainforests of the Philippines with upright stems boldly patterned with dark and light zebra-like banding. Atop these dramatic petioles sit large, glossy, arrow-shaped green leaves. An upright grower that requires no support; subject to the dormancy typical of the genus, recovering reliably when conditions improve.

  • Light: Bright indirect light maintains the strongest petiole banding and most vigorous growth; insufficient light causes stretched, weak petioles. Avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves.

  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration are essential — root rot is the primary cultivation failure. Never waterlogged.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool below 60°F can trigger dormancy. Humidity of 60%+ supports the best growth, though it tolerates average household humidity reasonably well.

  • Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; keep lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the primary cultivation failure — when in doubt, underwater.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy.
