Anthurium Besseae 'Umbra'
A dark-selected form of the compact, epiphytic Anthurium besseae, 'Umbra' is prized for the exceptional depth of its foliage — heart-shaped, densely velvety leaves in a deep, near-shadowed green with the bold white to silver venation characteristic of the species, but with a distinctly darker, moodier cast that gives the plant an unusually dramatic presence for its relatively modest size. Native to the cloud forests of Colombia and Bolivia, A. besseae grows as a small, slow-moving epiphyte with leaves that rarely exceed a foot in length — making 'Umbra' an ideal candidate for shelving, terrariums, or curated collector setups where its refined detail can be appreciated up close. It also produces striking red to orange inflorescences in the right conditions, adding a vivid seasonal punctuation to the dark foliage.
Provide bright indirect light to maintain the depth of the dark velvet leaves and support healthy growth — insufficient light dulls the foliage and slows an already deliberate growth rate. As a true epiphyte, it is sensitive to overwatering; keep the medium lightly and consistently moist but allow the top inch to approach dryness between waterings, and use a very open, well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum. High humidity of 65-80% is strongly preferred, making enclosed growing environments or dedicated humidifiers ideal. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-82°F away from cold drafts at all times. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
