Anthurium Cachabianum
Anthurium cachabianum
A rare species described by Luigi Sodiro in 1905, endemic to the lowland and western Andean moist forests of Ecuador, particularly Esmeraldas Province. It is grown for its deep green, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with prominent venation, and its thick, durable leaf constitution. Threatened by habitat loss in the wild, making cultivation efforts meaningful for its preservation.
-
Light: Bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which scorches the velvety leaves.
-
Soil: Open, well-draining, airy mix rich in organic material — orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 64-80°F; high humidity is essential — a humidifier, frequent ambient moisture, or terrarium culture supports the best growth.
-
Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but never waterlogged; ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Allow only the top layer to approach dryness between waterings.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; reduce in winter.
