Anthurium Ceronii

A rare Colombian epiphyte described by Thomas Croat and named in honor of botanist Julio Cerón — a compact, narrow-leaved velvet species that occupies a distinctive niche between the broad cordate velvets and the pendant strap-leaf anthuriums, producing elongated, lance-shaped to narrowly ovate leaves of 15-25cm with a genuine velvety surface texture and subtle silver venation that catches light with a quiet iridescence rather than the high-contrast brilliance of more widely collected velvet species. New leaves emerge in a soft, pale green before slowly deepening to the rich emerald green of maturity — a gradual transition that extends the pleasure of each new leaf over days rather than hours. The short, sturdy petioles carry the narrow leaves in an upright to slightly spreading arrangement, and the overall compact growth habit makes ceronii one of the more practically sized collector velvet anthuriums, suited to terrarium culture, humid shelves, or any display situation where a smaller-format velvet species with genuine collector character is the goal. The subtle, understated aesthetic — narrow form, quiet venation, velvety surface — makes it a plant whose appeal deepens the longer it is observed.

  • Light: Bright indirect to filtered light; the velvety surface is sensitive to direct sun exposure. Good indirect light maintains the deepest emerald coloration and best silver vein visibility.

  • Soil: Open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage essential while maintaining consistent moisture at the root zone.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 64-80°F; high humidity essential — 70-80% supports the best velvet texture and cleanest leaf emergence. Well suited to terrarium or cabinet culture.

  • Watering: Keep evenly and consistently moist — do not allow to dry out between waterings as with many other anthuriums. Water when the top inch of medium approaches dryness; never waterlog.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 4 weeks during active growth; light, consistent feeding supports the steadiest growth. Reduce in winter.
