Anthurium Deborah Ward
Anthurium papillilaminum × Anthurium crystallinum

A named hybrid pairing two of the most foundational velvet anthuriums in collector hybridization. A. papillilaminum contributes its thick, muscular, papillose-velvety leaf texture, ribbed and winged petioles, and rich mahogany emergent coloration. A. crystallinum brings its broadly heart-shaped, deeply velvety leaves and brilliant silver-white crystalline venation. The cross combines papillilaminum's leaf substance and dark pigmentation with crystallinum's venation contrast, producing dark, velvety cordate leaves with venation that brightens as the plant matures. Individual seedling expression varies.

  • Light: Bright but soft indirect light — the papillilaminum lineage prefers gentler light levels; consistent good indirect light supports the best venation contrast without bleaching the velvet surface. Avoid direct sun.

  • Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; never waterlogged.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential for the velvet surface quality and cleanest leaf emergence from both parent lineages.

  • Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
