Anthurium Dressleri × Black Diamond
Anthurium dressleri × (Anthurium regale × Anthurium luxurians)
A three-lineage hybrid that pairs Anthurium dressleri — the compact, thick-leaved Panamanian understory species celebrated for its deep purple-to-near-black emergent coloration, muted venation, ribbed winged petioles, and dense dark pigmentation — against the 'Black Diamond' hybrid, itself a cross between A. regale and A. luxurians that combines regale's large-scale velvety cordate constitution and prominent venation with luxurians' deeply bullate, quilted, leathery surface. The dressleri parent contributes compactness, extreme dark pigmentation, thick leaf constitution, and the characteristic ribbed petiole structure that passes consistently into its hybrids. The Black Diamond parent brings scale potential, velvet surface quality, and the three-dimensional bullate texture from the luxurians lineage alongside the architectural, large-format leaf from regale. The resulting cross occupies an interesting middle ground — more compact and more darkly pigmented than a typical regale × luxurians offspring, with the dressleri's deep purple-black emergent coloration tempering the regale's golden-green new growth tendency, and the bullate surface from the luxurians lineage expressed on a leaf of more moderate size than Black Diamond alone. Muted venation from the dressleri side reduces the typical regale vein contrast, pushing the foliage toward a more uniform, intensely dark surface with primarily textural interest. Individual seedling variance applies across this three-way cross.
Provide bright but soft indirect light — dressleri is notably sensitive to high light intensity and develops its deepest pigmentation at lower fc levels than most velvet anthuriums, and that sensitivity carries into its hybrids. Cooler temperatures with meaningful day-to-night differential support the fullest dark emergent coloration from the dressleri lineage. Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged, watering when the top inch approaches dryness; use a chunky open epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage. High humidity of 70-80% is essential. Maintain warm but not hot temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
