Anthurium Forgetii × Luxurians
Frequently cited as the most compelling forgetii hybrid in existence — and for good reason — this cross between two exceptionally distinctive Cardiolonchium section species produces offspring that synthesize the most desirable traits of both parents into something that arguably surpasses either on its own. Anthurium forgetii contributes its defining characteristic: the complete absence of a leaf sinus, producing a perfectly rounded, tearcdrop-shaped blade with the petiole attaching centrally rather than at the base of a notch — a shape so geometrically clean it barely looks botanical. Anthurium luxurians brings the deeply pebbled, bullate quilting that ripples the leaf surface between its prominent veining into raised panels, a near-black dark saturation, and a thick, leathery constitution that gives the foliage physical substance and extraordinary durability. The result is a compact hemiepiphytic plant with round to broadly oval, sinus-free leaves that are heavily quilted, deeply dark, and covered in a satin iridescent sheen that shifts in light — lush, almost glossy, and entirely unlike the white-veined look of most collector anthuriums. Individual seedlings vary, as this is an open-cross hybrid rather than a stabilized cultivar, meaning each plant is genetically unique and the depth of quilting, darkness, and leaf roundness shifts between specimens. That unpredictability is part of the appeal.
Provide bright indirect light — good light supports the deepest, most saturated dark coloration and the most defined bullate quilting; low light produces flatter, paler leaves with less textural depth. Keep the medium consistently evenly moist but never waterlogged, allowing the top inch to approach dryness between thorough waterings; use a chunky, open aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. High humidity of 60-80% is required — the thick leaf constitution from the luxurians parent makes this more tolerant than many velvet anthuriums, but humidity below 50% causes tip browning and slows the development of the characteristic quilted surface. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
