Anthurium Vittariifolium Variegated
Anthurium vittariifolium 'Variegata'
An extraordinary rarity within an already coveted species, the variegated form of Anthurium vittariifolium takes the pendulous, ribbon-like strap leaves the species is celebrated for and layers them with irregular streaks, marbling, and splashes of creamy white to soft ivory — each leaf a unique, fluid expression of one-of-a-kind patterning. Native to the tropical lowland forests of South America from Colombia through Brazil and Peru, it grows as an epiphyte and is best displayed in a hanging basket or on an elevated shelf where its long, cascading leaves can drape freely. The variegated form is significantly scarcer than the species and grows more slowly, as the reduced chlorophyll in the cream sectors places greater energy demands on the green tissue.
This cultivar performs best in bright indirect light — slightly stronger exposure than the non-variegated form supports the photosynthetic demands of the cream-laden tissue, though direct sun scorches the variegated areas rapidly. Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged, allowing the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; as a true epiphyte it is sensitive to soggy conditions. A very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum with excellent airflow to the roots is ideal. High humidity of 60-70%+ supports the long leaf development and prevents tip browning on the extended leaf blades. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F and keep away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
