Huperzia carnita 'See Da' Tassel Fern
Description
A stunning and rare epiphytic fern ally, Huperzia carnita 'See Da' is a collector's gem prized for its dramatic, cascading architecture. Dark green leaves are lobed along pale green stems, creating full, bushy specimens with an elegant draping form. A pendulous plant with slender branches and densely crowded leaves, it is ideally suited for hanging baskets, where its trailing stems can reach impressive lengths over time. Despite its fern-like appearance, Huperzia is not a true fern — it is a spore-producing plant more distantly related to ferns, known for the tassel-like spore-bearing structures that appear at the tips of its branches. A slow grower with a prehistoric charm, 'See Da' rewards patient keepers with a truly one-of-a-kind display.
Care Guide
Light Most Huperzia species require full shade with no direct sun. They also need consistent high humidity, yet plenty of good air movement — a combination that makes placement the key to success. Bright, filtered light or a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal. Harsh midday or afternoon sun will scorch the foliage.
Water Watering will be frequent — often several times per week, or nearly daily in warm or brightly lit conditions. Plant in a chunky, open medium that does not retain excess moisture, and provide frequent soaks to keep the root zone consistently hydrated. Never let this plant dry out completely.
Humidity High humidity is essential. When watering, rinse the whole plant — this shower helps provide the ambient moisture the plant relies on, mimicking the heavy fog and mist of its natural alpine tropical habitat. A humidity level of 60–80% is ideal.
Soil / Medium Good air movement, relatively high humidity, and perfect drainage that stays moist but never soggy are the keys to success. Basket culture is highly recommended, as well as mounting on wooden plaques or tree-fern slabs. A chunky coco chip or orchid bark mix works well.
Fertilizer Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer or slow-release granules at low strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season. Osmocote is a well-regarded option, as stronger fertilizers may burn the plant.
Temperature A warm-growing tropical species. Keep above 60°F (15°C) at all times. It thrives in the warm, humid conditions of USDA zones 10–12.
Pests No serious diseases or pests are widely known, though occasional fern scale can cause damage, and slugs and snails may eat the tips of young shoots. Periodic preventative treatment with a systemic fungicide and insecticide is recommended.
Toxicity Reported to be toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.
Propagation The best approach is to divide the root ball into sections, ensuring fibrous roots are attached to each stem. Tip layering — placing a frond tip into a moist medium — is another option, though it requires months of patience. Spore propagation is extremely slow and generally not practical.
