Huperzia Goebelii (syn. Phlegmariurus goebelii)
A rare epiphytic lycophyte — not a true fern but a member of one of the most ancient lineages of vascular plants on Earth — native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it grows anchored to tree branches and hanging downward in spectacular pendant colonies. Also known as the Blue Tassel Fern or Goebel's Clubmoss, it is best displayed hanging or mounted to allow its arching, densely branched stems to cascade freely. Reproduces via spores rather than seeds, and grows slowly but can form impressive specimens over time with consistent care. Toxicity data is limited — keep away from pets and children as a precaution.
-
Light: Low to medium filtered indirect light — mimics the forest understory where it naturally grows. Avoid direct sun which damages the delicate foliage.
-
Soil: Best grown mounted on cork bark or tree fern slabs with sphagnum moss; if potted, use a very open, fine bark and moss mix with excellent drainage and airflow. Never in dense potting soil.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-75°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is critical — terrarium or greenhouse culture is ideal. Good air movement is essential alongside high humidity.
-
Watering: Keep consistently and evenly moist — never allow to dry out fully. Use rainwater or distilled water; sensitive to mineral buildup from tap water.
-
Fertilizer: Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer diluted to quarter strength; light, consistent feeding only — sensitive to fertilizer salt accumulation.
