Huperzia carinata 'Soi Dragon'

A named selection of Huperzia carinata — one of the most elegant tassel ferns in cultivation — 'Soi Dragon' is prized for its exceptionally long, densely branching pendulous stems that cascade in a full, dramatic curtain when displayed in a hanging basket. Stems are clothed in small, tightly overlapping dark green leaves arranged in a distinctive keeled formation along each branch, with vivid lime-green new growth tips that glow against the deeper mature foliage, creating a two-tone contrast that makes each actively growing stem immediately eye-catching. Like all members of the Huperzia / Phlegmariurus family, this is not a true fern but a lycophyte — an ancient lineage of vascular plants with a history stretching back hundreds of millions of years. Despite its exotic appearance it is one of the more manageable tassel ferns in cultivation once its core needs are understood, rewarding consistent moisture and humidity with steady, graceful growth. Best displayed suspended where the full cascading habit can be appreciated freely.

• Light: Bright indirect light to dappled shade. A few hours of soft morning sun is beneficial. Avoid harsh midday or afternoon sun — scorches the delicate foliage rapidly.
• Water: Water frequently — several times per week or nearly daily in warm, bright conditions. Never allow to dry out completely. When watering, rinse the entire plant to provide ambient moisture along the stems. The medium must drain freely by the following day — soggy conditions cause crown rot.
• Humidity: 60-80%+ essential. High humidity combined with good air movement is the key to success. A humidifier, greenhouse environment, or regular showering of the entire plant replicates the moist tropical forest conditions this plant requires.
• Soil: Chunky, fast-draining epiphytic medium — coco chip, fine bark, and perlite. Avoid any dense or moisture-retentive mix. Best displayed in a hanging basket where drainage is immediate and air circulation is unrestricted.
• Fertilizer: Diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength every 4-6 weeks. Light feeder — Osmocote or similar slow-release granules are a well-regarded option. Avoid stronger fertilizers which can burn the delicate root system.
• Temperature: Warm tropical conditions — 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep above 55°F. Protect from cold drafts and air conditioning vents.
• Toxicity: Reported to be toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children as a precaution.
