Philodendron Billietiae

A striking and immediately recognizable species from the rainforests of Brazil, Guyana, and French Guiana, Philodendron billietiae is distinguished by one of the most dramatic petiole-to-leaf combinations in the genus — the long, elongated, glossy leaves with gently undulating margins are handsome on their own, but it is the vivid orange-yellow petioles that make a mature specimen genuinely unforgettable, the warm citrus color running the full length of each leaf stalk in a contrast against the deep green blade that is unlike anything else in the genus. First collected by French botanist Frieda Billiet in the 1980s in French Guiana, from whom it takes its name, it grows as a hemiepiphytic climber in the wild, producing progressively longer, more dramatically proportioned leaves as it ascends. Juvenile leaves are far smaller and more paddle-shaped; the characteristic elongated form with wavy margins and brilliant petioles develops fully only on maturing climbing specimens, making vertical support not merely helpful but transformative for this species.

This species produces dramatically larger, more elongated leaves and the most vivid orange petiole coloration as it climbs a firm vertical support — a tall moss pole is strongly recommended. Bright indirect light supports the fastest growth and most saturated petiole color; lower light slows development and can mute the characteristic orange. Water when the top 1-2" of medium is dry, ensuring excellent drainage and never allowing roots to sit in standing water; provide a chunky, open aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Humidity of 60-70% supports healthy leaf development and clean unfurling of the long leaf blades. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
