Philodendron Joepii Aurea Variegated
Philodendron × joepii (aurea variegated form)

A variegated form of Philodendron × joepii — a confirmed natural hybrid discovered in French Guiana in 1991 by Moen Joep, whose tri-lobed leaf form was so unusual it was initially mistaken for insect damage. The leaf is the plant's defining character: a narrow, dramatically elongated central lobe flanked by two widely spreading lateral lobes in a trident-like silhouette found nowhere else in the genus. The aurea form overlays this with golden-yellow variegation in sectors and marbling across the deep green surface, each leaf uniquely patterned. A climber that develops progressively larger, more dramatically tri-lobed leaves with vertical support. Variegation is unpredictable across successive leaves.

  • Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the golden variegation and supporting growth across the reduced-chlorophyll sectors; insufficient light causes reversion toward green. Avoid direct sun which scorches the yellow sectors.

  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage essential. Never waterlogged.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-85°F; humidity of 60-70% supports the cleanest leaf emergence and best color.

  • Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog — variegated forms are more sensitive to root stress.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; consistent feeding supports growth across the reduced-chlorophyll sectors. Reduce in winter.
