Pink Variegated Chamberbitter Phyllanthus urinaria 'Pink Variegated'

A rare and eye-catching variegated form of the otherwise humble chamberbitter, this cultivar elevates a commonly overlooked tropical herb into a bona fide collector's plant. Delicate, feathery compound-like leaves are splashed and edged in shades of cream, pink, and soft green, creating a multicolored mosaic along slender, arching stems. Like the species, leaves display a charming nyctinastic response — folding closed in the evening and reopening with daylight. Tiny flowers and the species' characteristic bead-like fruits form along the undersides of the stems, adding further texture. A compact grower well-suited to small pots, terrariums, or as a novelty accent in a tropical collection.

Light Bright indirect light brings out the best color and variegation. Some gentle morning sun is beneficial and can intensify the pink tones, but harsh afternoon sun will scorch the delicate foliage. Avoid deep shade, which causes reversion toward greener growth and a leggy habit.

Water Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. This plant is relatively thirsty given its fine root system and small pot requirements. Water when the surface of the medium begins to dry, and ensure the container drains freely. Drought stress causes rapid leaf drop.

Humidity Prefers moderate to high humidity in the range of 50–70%. Dry air causes leaf margin browning and can accelerate leaf drop, particularly on the variegated portions which are more sensitive than the green tissue. Misting or a pebble tray helps in drier indoor environments.

Soil / Medium A light, well-draining potting mix works well. A blend of quality potting soil with added perlite or coarse sand provides the drainage this plant needs while retaining enough moisture to prevent rapid dry-out. Avoid heavy or compacted mixes.

Fertilizer Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Avoid heavy feeding, as this is a small plant with modest nutrient demands. Excess fertilizer can cause tip burn on the variegated tissue.

Temperature A warm tropical plant that prefers temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). It does not tolerate cold and should be kept well above 50°F (10°C) at all times. Protect from air conditioning drafts, which can cause rapid deterioration.

Pests Spider mites and aphids are the most likely visitors, particularly in dry conditions. The fine, delicate foliage makes infestations easy to miss until significant damage has occurred, so inspect regularly. Treat promptly with insecticidal soap or a diluted neem solution.

Toxicity Phyllanthus urinaria has a long history of medicinal use in traditional herbalism, and the plant is generally considered non-toxic. That said, ingestion of any ornamental cultivar is not recommended, and sensitivities can vary. Keep away from pets and small children as a precaution.

Propagation Propagate by stem cuttings or by division of established clumps. Cuttings root readily in moist medium or water in warm, humid conditions. The species also self-seeds freely in its native range, though seed availability for the variegated form is essentially nonexistent — cuttings are the reliable path.
