Scindapsus pictus Jade Satin Variegated
A variegated selection of Scindapsus pictus 'Jade Satin' — itself the all-green cultivar of the species more widely known for its silver-mottled forms — native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it grows as a climbing epiphyte with broad, succulent-textured leaves that press and lay flat against its climbing surface in an appressed habit that is characteristic of the species in the wild. Where the standard 'Jade Satin' is grown for the pure, deep, richly saturated jade green of its leaves and the subtle satin-velvet finish that gives the cultivar its name, the variegated form adds irregular golden to bright yellow splashes, streaks, and sectoral patches across that deep green ground — a warm-toned aurea variegation that creates a striking contrast between the vivid gold and the deep jade, with each leaf showing a completely unique and unpredictable pattern. The leaves themselves retain the broad, somewhat ovate, succulent-looking character of the parent cultivar — thicker and more substantial in texture than many trailing aroids, with a pleasing weight and depth to each leaf. As with all chimeric variegated plants, no two leaves are alike and the degree of golden expression varies from subtle marbling on one leaf to bold half-moon or near-full sectoral coverage on another, making the plant a constantly evolving visual experience.
Bright indirect light is the most critical variable for the variegated form — necessary both for maintaining the strength and saturation of the golden variegation and for supporting the vigorous growth that keeps the plant looking full and healthy. Insufficient light causes the variegation to fade and new growth to emerge progressively greener as the chlorophyll-rich cells outcompete the variegated ones. Allow the top 2" of medium to dry thoroughly between waterings — Scindapsus pictus as a species is notably drought-tolerant and more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering, making it important to err on the dry side rather than the wet. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Moderate humidity of 50-70% suits it well. Provide a flat, wide climbing surface to allow the leaves to press flat as the plant climbs, or allow it to trail from a hanging basket. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-82°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
