Adenia Perrieri

A rare caudiciform succulent native to Madagascar, grown by collectors for its dramatic swollen caudex — a bulbous, water-storing trunk that forms a sculptural base — from which climbing or trailing vining stems and lobed leaves emerge. A member of the passionflower family (Passifloraceae), it is deciduous, dropping its foliage and going dormant during its rest period. Prized as a specimen for its architectural caudex. Note: Adenia species are highly toxic if ingested.

• Light: Bright light, including some direct sun, encourages the best caudex development and compact growth; a very bright position is ideal.

• Soil: Fast-draining, gritty succulent or cactus mix with added pumice or perlite; excellent drainage is essential — the caudex rots readily in wet conditions. Never waterlogged.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-90°F; protect from cold below 50°F. Low to moderate humidity suits it well — good air circulation is important.

• Watering: Water sparingly when in active growth, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings; reduce drastically and keep nearly dry during dormancy when the plant drops its leaves. Overwatering is the primary cause of caudex rot.

• Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a diluted low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season; do not feed during dormancy.
