Alocasia Shattered Glass
A compact hybrid alocasia grown for its dramatic foliage — glossy, heart-shaped leaves with a dark green to near-black surface and a striking mosaic of silvery-white marbling between the veins, giving the fractured "shattered glass" effect the name references. An upright, self-heading grower that requires no support. Subject to the dormancy typical of the genus, recovering reliably when conditions improve.
-
Light: Bright indirect light maintains the strongest marbling contrast and most vigorous growth; avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves. Insufficient light dulls the pattern.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration are essential — root rot is the primary cultivation failure. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool below 60°F triggers dormancy. High humidity of 60-70% supports the best growth — brown crispy edges signal air too dry.
-
Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; keep lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the primary cultivation failure — when in doubt, underwater.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy.
