Hoya Carnosa 'Krimson Queen' Albo Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen'
A popular variegated cultivar of Hoya carnosa — the classic Wax Plant, native to East Asia and Australia — distinguished by creamy white to pink margins surrounding a green leaf center, with new growth often emerging in pink and cream tones. A vigorous trailing and climbing epiphyte well suited to hanging baskets or a trellis, producing clusters of star-shaped, sweetly fragrant flowers when mature. One of the more forgiving Hoyas. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new blooms develop from the same spurs.
-
Light: Bright indirect light is important for maintaining the variegation and pink coloration; some gentle morning sun is tolerated. Avoid harsh direct sun, and low light which fades the variegation and slows growth.
-
Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite; Hoya resents dense, clogged soil. Excellent drainage essential.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-80°F, never below 50°F; tolerates average household humidity well thanks to its thick waxy leaves, though moderate humidity supports the best growth.
-
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly — more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering. The waxy leaves store water well; never let it sit in standing water.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; a higher-phosphorus formula supports blooming. Reduce in winter.
