Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' (inner variegated)
A variegated form of the Hindu Rope Hoya — Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' — native to East Asia, characterized by thick, tightly curled, rope-like leaves that twist densely along trailing stems. The 'Mauna Loa' designation refers specifically to inner variegation, where the lighter cream, white, or yellow coloration appears in the leaf centers surrounded by darker green margins (as opposed to the margin-variegated 'albomarginata' form). A slow-growing, semi-succulent trailer well suited to hanging baskets, producing clusters of fragrant, star-shaped waxy flowers when mature. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new blooms develop from the same spurs.

Light: Bright indirect light is ideal for maintaining the variegation; gentle morning or late afternoon sun enhances the lighter centers. Too little light causes reversion to green; avoid harsh midday sun which scorches the pale sections.

Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite; Hoya resents dense, clogged soil. Excellent drainage essential.

Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-80°F; protect from cold and drafts below 50°F. Tolerates drier air better than thin-leaved Hoyas thanks to its thick succulent leaves, though moderate to high humidity supports the best growth and prevents loss of variegation.

Watering: Drought tolerant — allow the top 1-2" of soil to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. More susceptible to overwatering than underwatering; the thick leaves store water well.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; reduce in winter.

The box arrived at UPS on a Saturday, but since deliveries aren’t made to my area until Monday, it sat there over the weekend. It finally arrived Monday afternoon. When I finally opened it, I found the plant lying loosely inside the box. The pot was wrapped in saran wrap, but all the soil had spilled out and was scattered throughout the box—and the soil was completely dry. I’m truly hoping the plant survives.

I love the Mauna Loa, and the plant I received is healthy and beautiful. I did go ahead and put it into a terracotta pot without removing any soil or disturbing the roots. The soil is a bit dense and was covered in moss, so I am hopeful it can dry out a bit more quickly in the terracotta.
Realized there was a heatwave coming messaged the seller and was too late to upgrade my shipping. Turns out it wasn’t needed plant arrived perfectly fine thanks to being packed so well!

This plant was very close to the one pictured. It has been in quarantine (as I do for all new plants) and I have not noticed any bugs. It's healthy and hasn't experienced any changes over the last week from shipping or moving to my house. I appreciate the care in the packaging and the similarity of the seller's images to the plant I received.

A shipping label was created 1/24 And stayed in transit until 1/30 my item was not initially shipped until 1/30. That is a very long time. I ordered two other plants from two other sellers 3 days after I purchased from this seller and I received those orders before I received this order. To me that is too long! do not create a shipping label and let it sit in transit. That is the only reason why I would not buy from the seller again if I’m going to spend more than $100 on a plant I only expect my plant to be shipped out as soon as possible. Otherwise, if you don’t have a problem, waiting 2 weeks then order, the plant is beautiful
