Hoya Erythrostemma Silver

A silver-foliage form of Hoya erythrostemma — a climbing wax plant native to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and the Malay Peninsula, where it grows as an epiphyte along rivers and streams in lowland forest. The 'Silver' form is grown for its broad, thick, waxy leaves washed evenly in shimmering silver over a faint green base, with distinct venation. It produces upright clusters of star-shaped flowers with a pale pink corolla and contrasting reddish, fuzzy corona. A vining epiphyte well suited to a trellis or hanging basket. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new blooms develop from the same spurs.

• Light: Bright indirect light, but slightly less than most Hoyas — too much bright light diminishes the silvery foliage. Some gentle morning sun is fine; avoid harsh midday sun. Insufficient light causes stretched growth.

• Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk, rich in organic matter; Hoya resents dense, clogged soil. Prefers to be slightly root-bound.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-85°F; protect from drafts and cold below 60°F. Moderate to high humidity of 50-75% supports the best growth.

• Watering: Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly — more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering. The thick leaves store water well; ensure good air circulation.

• Fertilizer: Feed during the growing season with a low-nitrogen fertilizer containing sufficient phosphorus and potassium to support blooming; reduce in winter.
