Hoya carnosa 'Purple Pride'

A colorful sport of Hoya carnosa — often compared to the Krimson Queen — grown for its elongated, veiny foliage with bright pink and purple variegation. Its distinguishing trait is that it holds its pink coloration much longer than Krimson Queen, whose new leaves emerge pink but quickly fade to white. New growth is the most vividly colored, gradually softening as it matures. A trailing and climbing Hoya well suited to a trellis, pole, or hanging basket, and low-maintenance like others in the genus. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new blooms develop from the same spurs.

• Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the pink and purple variegation; insufficient light fades the color. Avoid harsh direct sun which scorches the leaves.

• Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite; Hoya resents dense, clogged soil. Excellent drainage essential.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-80°F, never below 50°F; tolerates average household humidity thanks to its thick waxy leaves, though moderate humidity supports the best growth.

• Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly — more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering. The waxy leaves store water well; never let it sit in standing water.

• Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during active growth; reduce in winter.
