Hoya Nova Ghost
Hoya carnosa 'Nova Ghost'
A silvery cultivar of Hoya carnosa — a reverted form of the coveted 'Argentea Princess' — grown for its thick, fleshy leaves that are almost entirely silver with a frosted, ghostly sheen and prominent darker veining. Like all wax plants it is an epiphytic trailing climber well suited to hanging baskets or shelves, producing clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers when mature. Unusually among Hoyas, this cultivar prefers slightly less light to maintain its silvery coloration. Never remove the peduncles after flowering — new blooms develop from the same spurs.
-
Light: Bright indirect light, but slightly shadier than most Hoyas — too much bright light dulls or discolors the silvery foliage. An east- or west-facing spot is ideal; avoid harsh direct sun.
-
Soil: Very well-draining epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite, rich in organic matter; Hoya resents dense, clogged soil. Excellent drainage essential.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-80°F; less cold-tolerant than other carnosa varieties, so protect from cold drafts. Moderate to high humidity of 50-70% supports the best growth — a humidifier helps in dry months.
-
Watering: Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly — more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering. The thick leaves store water well; never let it sit in excess water.
-
Fertilizer: Feed during the growing season with a low-nitrogen fertilizer containing sufficient phosphorus and potassium to support blooming; reduce in winter.
