Anthurium Ximenportilla
Anthurium papillilaminum × Anthurium luxurians
A named hybrid of two of the most texturally extraordinary compact anthuriums — A. papillilaminum, the Panamanian understory species with its thick, muscular, densely papillose-velvety surface, ribbed petioles, and deep mahogany emergent coloration; and A. luxurians, the Colombian species with its deeply bullate, lacquer-glossy, three-dimensionally quilted leaf surface. Both parents produce rich mahogany new growth, and the cross inherits this with full intensity. The result is a leaf that is both velvety and bullate simultaneously — a textural combination neither parent achieves alone. Individual seedling expression varies.
-
Light: Bright but soft indirect light — papillilaminum prefers gentler light levels, making this more sensitive to high-intensity light than many velvet anthuriums. Avoid direct sun.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; luxurians lineage is particularly prone to root rot in waterlogged conditions.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80%+ is essential for maintaining the velvet surface and glossy bullate character simultaneously.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow only the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never allow to dry out fully; never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
