Anthurium Vittariifolium

A strap-leafed anthurium of refined, architectural elegance, Anthurium vittariifolium is one of the most graceful pendulous aroids in cultivation. Its long, narrow, ribbon-like leaves cascade in flowing curtains from an epiphytic root system, reaching impressive lengths on mature specimens and creating a display that is best appreciated when the plant is elevated or suspended freely. Native to the tropical lowland rainforests of South America — from Colombia through Brazil and Peru — it is closely related to A. friedrichsthalii but generally produces broader, slightly more substantial leaf blades with a glossy deep green finish. Still relatively scarce outside dedicated collector circles, it rewards patient, attentive care with one of the most quietly spectacular hanging displays in the aroid world.

As a true epiphyte, this species is sensitive to waterlogged conditions — provide a very open, chunky mix of orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum with excellent airflow to the roots, or mount on cork bark with sphagnum. Bright indirect light supports healthy growth and the longest leaf development; direct sun scorches the glossy surface. Keep the medium consistently moist but allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings and never allow roots to sit in standing water. High humidity of 60-80% is essential — the long leaf tips are prone to browning in dry air, and a dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F year-round with no cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
