Ceratostema Charianthum

A pendent epiphytic shrub in the Ericaceae (blueberry family), described by Albert C. Smith and native to the Andean cloud forests. Like others in the genus, it grows from a lignotuber with alternate, coriaceous leaves, producing waxy, tubular hanging flowers with elongated lobes adapted for hummingbird pollination. Best displayed where its pendant flowers can be appreciated; never remove spent peduncles.

• Light: Bright filtered indirect light, equivalent to dappled forest canopy (70-80% shade cloth); avoid direct midday sun which scorches the foliage.

• Soil: Open, acidic epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite, or mounted on cork or tree fern with sphagnum; excellent drainage essential. Use rainwater or reverse osmosis water to avoid mineral buildup.

• Temperature/Humidity: Cool to intermediate — daytime 64-79°F with a distinct nighttime drop to 50-60°F to encourage blooming; high humidity of 70-90% is essential, with good airflow at all times.

• Watering: Keep consistently moist but never soggy; water thoroughly when the top layer feels slightly dry, allowing excess to drain completely. Never let roots dry out fully.

• Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a low-pH ericaceous formula during active growth; sensitive to fertilizer salt buildup. Reduce in winter.
