Ceratostema Loucianae 'Villosa'
A pendent epiphytic shrub in the Ericaceae (blueberry family) from the Andean cloud forests, distinguished by its soft, hairy leaves and a lignotuber that develops over time. It produces waxy, tubular hanging flowers adapted for hummingbird pollination, in the pendant form characteristic of the genus. Shipping-sensitive and best displayed where its hanging flowers can be appreciated; never remove spent peduncles. An advanced-care plant.
-
Light: Bright filtered indirect light, equivalent to dappled forest canopy; avoid harsh direct sun which scorches the foliage.
-
Soil: Open, acidic epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite, or mounted with sphagnum; excellent drainage essential. Use rainwater or reverse osmosis water to avoid mineral buildup.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Cool to intermediate — daytime 64-79°F with a distinct nighttime drop to 50-60°F to encourage blooming; high humidity of 70-90% is essential, with good airflow at all times.
-
Watering: Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged; water thoroughly when the top layer feels slightly dry, allowing excess to drain completely.
-
Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a low-pH ericaceous formula during active growth; sensitive to fertilizer salt buildup. Reduce in winter.
