Huperzia Squarrosa 'Thailand' Huperzia squarrosa (syn. Phlegmariurus squarrosus)

An epiphytic lycophyte — not a true fern but a member of one of the most ancient lineages of vascular plants — known as the Rock Tassel Fern, native to the rainforests of tropical Asia, Australia, and the western Pacific where it grows on moss-covered tree trunks and rocks. It forms large, dense clumps of long, highly branched, pendent stems densely covered in scale-like leaves, cascading up to 2-2.5 feet and resembling a green tassel or pipe cleaner. Best displayed mounted or in a hanging basket. Grows slowly and reproduces via spores rather than seeds.

• Light: Bright indirect light to semi-shade; deep shade slows growth and direct sun scorches the foliage.

• Soil: Best mounted on cork bark or grown in a shallow container with a very open, porous bark and moss mix; excellent drainage and airflow essential. Never dense potting soil.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 60-80°F; high humidity of 70-80% with good air circulation is critical. Intolerant of drying out.

• Watering: Keep consistently and evenly moist — never allow to dry out fully, never waterlog. Use rainwater or distilled water; sensitive to mineral buildup.

• Fertilizer: Feed monthly with a balanced or nitrogen fertilizer diluted to quarter strength; light, consistent feeding helps move along its naturally slow growth.
