Monstera Aurea Monstera deliciosa 'Aurea'

One of the three great variegated forms of Monstera deliciosa, the Aurea stands apart from its Thai Constellation and Albo siblings with a warm, golden-yellow variegation that feels simultaneously tropical and luminous. Leaves display the iconic fenestrations and split margins of the species, overlaid with sectors, half-moon patterns, and speckles of rich yellow to soft lime — a color palette that evokes sunshine filtering through a rainforest canopy. Variegation is chimeric in nature, meaning expression varies dramatically from leaf to leaf — some emerge nearly fully yellow, others heavily marbled, others almost fully green — keeping every new unfurling genuinely exciting. Slower growing than its fully green counterpart and still commanding serious collector prices, the Aurea is a long-term centerpiece plant that only becomes more impressive with age and size.

  • Light: Bright indirect light essential for vivid golden variegation. Insufficient light causes reversion toward green. At least 8 hours of bright indirect light daily recommended. No direct sun — yellow sectors scorch quickly.
  • Water: Water when top 1-2" of medium is dry. Soak thoroughly and allow full drainage. Never allow roots to sit in standing water — root rot is the most common way variegated Monsteras are lost.
  • Humidity: 60%+ preferred. Yellow sectors are more prone to browning in dry air than green tissue. Humidifier strongly recommended, especially in climate-controlled environments.
  • Soil: Chunky aroid mix — coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark. Provide a moss pole or trellis for climbing support — encourages larger, more fenestrated mature leaves.
  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2-4 weeks during growing season. Avoid excess nitrogen — promotes green growth at the expense of yellow variegation. Reduce in winter.
  • Temperature: 65-85°F. Keep above 55°F. Cold drafts can blacken variegated tissue rapidly — keep away from cold windows and AC vents.
  • Pests: Watch for thrips, spider mites, and scale. Thrips damage on yellow sectors is permanent and irreversible — preventative spray rotation strongly recommended. Inspect every new leaf as it unfurls.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings below a node with aerial root, rooted in water or sphagnum moss. Chimeric variegation means cutting coloration may differ significantly from the parent plant.
