Philodendron Jose Buono Albo Mutation
A chimeric mutation within the Philodendron 'Jose Buono' cultivar line — itself a rare variegated climbing philodendron of uncertain hybrid origin, discovered in Puerto Rico and likely related to P. domesticum, known for its large, elongated, broadly paddle-shaped to sagittate leaves with undulating wavy margins and bold cream-to-white variegation — in which the standard soft cream marbling has given way to a dramatically intensified albo-grade expression: large, bold, pure white to near-white sectors covering substantial portions of each leaf surface, with a characteristically soft pinkish blush developing along the margins where the chlorophyll-free white tissue meets the deep, richly glossy green. The pink blush at the sector boundary is one of the more visually distinctive features of this mutation — a transitional zone of reduced pigmentation that gives the variegation boundaries a warm, almost watercolor quality rather than the hard edge of some chimeric aroids. The leaves themselves retain the full Jose Buono character in form — elongated, paddle-like, with the pleasingly undulating and ruffled margins that distinguish this cultivar from flat-leaved philodendrons — while the albo mutation pushes the variegation from the subtle into the dramatic, with individual leaves capable of showing near-half-leaf white sector coverage. As with all chimeric albo-type variegation, no two leaves produce the same pattern, the proportion of white to green varies unpredictably across successive leaves, and the most highly variegated leaves contain less chlorophyll and are correspondingly more sensitive to environmental stress.
A tall moss pole or climbing support is essential — Jose Buono is a vigorous hemiepiphytic climber that produces progressively larger, more dramatically variegated leaves as it ascends. Bright indirect light is critical for maintaining the albo variegation and supporting the plant's metabolism across the substantial white sectors, which contain no photosynthetic capacity — insufficient light causes reversion toward greener growth over time. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the chlorophyll-free white sectors readily, particularly along the pink-blushed margin zones. Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Humidity of 60-70% supports the cleanest leaf emergence. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
