Philodendron Verrucosum 'Esmeralda'
A geographically distinct collection of Philodendron verrucosum sourced from the Esmeraldas region of Ecuador, the 'Esmeralda' form distinguishes itself from the standard species and other regional collections by a notably more rounded leaf shape and a particularly vivid, intense red abaxial surface — the deep burgundy-red undersides characteristic of the species here achieving a richness that shows through to the adaxial side, where the luminous pale green to golden venation shimmers against the deep, velvety dark green leaf surface. The characteristic bristle-hairy, reddish-orange petioles of the species are present and, on mature climbing specimens, become increasingly ornate. Like all verrucosum, it is a hemiepiphyte that begins life in the rainforest canopy and eventually sends roots toward the soil below, and it is widely regarded as one of the more demanding but visually rewarding philodendrons a serious collector can grow — the combination of velvety texture, luminous veining, and dramatic red-backed foliage on a vigorous climber is genuinely unmatched in the genus.
This cultivar performs best on a tall, firm moss pole — vertical support is essential, and mature leaves on a climbing specimen are dramatically larger and more ornate than those on an unsupported plant. Provide bright indirect light without direct sun, which scorches the velvety surface; this species also appreciates slightly cooler growing temperatures than most philodendrons, ideally 65-75°F, which reflects its higher-altitude Ecuadorian cloud forest origins. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist — never waterlogged — using a very open, chunky aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. High humidity of 70%+ is non-negotiable; below 60% causes rapid browning of the leaf margins and petiole tips. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
