Huperzia Hang Hong is a rare epiphytic tassel fern belonging to the ancient Lycopodiaceae family of lycophytes. Native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand, it grows suspended from tree branches in humid tropical forests. This form is prized for its cascading stems densely covered with overlapping, scale-like microphylls that create a lush, architectural appearance. Its evolutionary lineage as a lycophyte and ecological role as an epiphyte make it a unique and highly ornamental species for advanced collections.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Thrives in shaded greenhouse or terrarium conditions. Avoid direct sun which can scorch foliage.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist; prefers consistent hydration but not waterlogging. Epiphytic roots require airflow.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%). Best grown in greenhouse or terrarium setups.
  • Temperature: Optimal range is 65–85°F. Protect from cold below 60°F.
  • Soil/Substrate: Best mounted or grown in a loose, airy medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite. Mimic epiphytic conditions.
  • Fertilizer: Apply diluted balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth. Avoid heavy feeding.
  • Growth Habit: Epiphytic, cascading stems with overlapping microphylls. Suitable for hanging baskets or mounted culture.
  • Common Issues:
    • Browning tips: low humidity or underwatering.
    • Rot: poor airflow or waterlogged substrate.
    • Pests: occasional mealybugs or scale; treat with insecticidal soap.
  • Toxicity: Not known to be toxic, but not recommended for ingestion.

Key Notes:
Huperzia Hang Hong thrives under high humidity, bright filtered light, and consistent moisture. Its cascading, architectural foliage makes it a dramatic specimen for collectors, especially valued in Southeast Asia where it naturally occurs in humid forest canopies. Proper epiphytic care and airflow are essential to maintain its health and ornamental appeal.
