Huperzia squarrosa is a striking epiphytic lycophyte native to tropical Asia, including Thailand, where it grows attached to trees in humid forests. Unlike true ferns, it belongs to the Lycopodiaceae family and reproduces via spores. Its cascading stems are densely covered with stiff, overlapping, lance-shaped leaves that create a bold, architectural appearance. In cultivation, it is prized for its dramatic hanging form and lush, evergreen foliage.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun which can scorch foliage. Performs well in shaded greenhouse or terrarium conditions.

  • Water: Keep evenly moist; prefers consistent hydration but not waterlogging. Epiphytic habit means roots need airflow.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%). Thrives in greenhouse or terrarium setups.

  • Temperature: Best between 65–85°F. Protect from cold below 60°F.

  • Soil/Substrate: Grows best mounted or in a loose, airy medium such as sphagnum moss, orchid bark, and perlite. Mimic epiphytic conditions.

  • Fertilizer: Apply diluted balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during active growth. Avoid heavy feeding.

  • Growth Habit: Epiphytic, cascading stems with stiff, overlapping leaves. Suitable for hanging baskets or mounts.

  • Common Issues:

    • Browning tips: low humidity or underwatering.

    • Rot: poor airflow or waterlogged substrate.

    • Pests: occasional mealybugs or scale; treat with insecticidal soap.

  • Toxicity: Not known to be toxic, but not recommended for ingestion.

Key Notes: Huperzia squarrosa thrives under high humidity, bright filtered light, and consistent moisture. Its cascading, architectural foliage makes it a dramatic specimen for collectors, especially in Thailand where it is naturally found in humid forest canopies. Proper epiphytic care and airflow are essential to maintain its health and ornamental appeal.
