Native to South Africa, the Leopard Lily is a charming, low-growing bulbous perennial prized for its striking foliage. Its broad, glossy leaves are mid-green and splashed with dark purple-green spots — a pattern reminiscent of a leopard's coat, giving the plant its common name. The spots tend to fade or disappear as the leaves mature and in lower light conditions.
In spring and early summer, it produces slender upright stems topped with small, white to pale greenish-white flowers arranged in a compact spike-like raceme. While the blooms are modest, the decorative foliage is the main attraction.
A highly adaptable and easy-care plant, Drimiopsis maculata thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for indoor growing or shaded garden beds. It is drought-tolerant once established, preferring well-drained soil and relatively infrequent watering. It goes semi-dormant in winter, during which watering should be reduced. Hardy in USDA zones 9–11, it is commonly grown as a houseplant in cooler climates.
