Philodendron Florida Beauty × Mayoi
Philodendron 'Florida Beauty' × Philodendron mayoi

A hybrid that takes two of the most structurally dramatic climbing philodendrons in the collector trade and crosses them into something that distills both parents' most distinctive qualities into a single plant. Philodendron 'Florida Beauty' — the variegated chimeric form of the squamiferum × pedatum Florida hybrid lineage — contributes its multi-lobed, dissected leaf architecture and its bold, unpredictable variegation in creamy white, soft yellow, and lime green against deep green, a variegation pattern so variable and visually active that no two leaves are ever alike. Philodendron mayoi, the Brazilian climber named in honor of botanist Simon Mayo, brings its contrasting parent character — deeply pinnately lobed, palm-like leaves with broad, rounded lobes cut in a pattern that gives the species an almost tropical-fan silhouette quite distinct from the squamiferum-style multi-finger lobing of the Florida lineage. The cross integrates these two lobing systems — the elongated, pointed, bristly-petiole Florida architecture meeting the rounder, more broadly cut mayoi lobe structure — producing deeply lobed, glossy leaves with a hybrid lobe form that is simultaneously more rounded than pure Florida and more dissected than pure mayoi, carrying the Florida Beauty's chimeric variegation across that restructured leaf shape. The variegation ranges from fine marbling to bold cream and yellow sectoral expression, with each successive leaf producing a new and unrepeatable pattern. A climbing hybrid that rewards vertical support with progressively larger, more dramatically lobed and variegated leaves.

A moss pole or climbing trellis is strongly recommended for the best leaf development — both parents are climbers and the cross inherits the same dynamic of producing larger, more characteristically lobed leaves with each foot of vertical growth. Bright indirect light is critical for maintaining the chimeric variegation — the cream and yellow sectors in Florida Beauty-derived plants are particularly light-sensitive, and insufficient light causes new growth to emerge progressively greener as chlorophyll-rich cells outcompete the variegated tissue. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the chlorophyll-poor sectors. Water when the top 1-2" of medium is dry in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Humidity of 60-70%+ supports the cleanest leaf emergence and best overall color. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-82°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
