Begonia Soli-Mutata
A Brazilian rhizomatous begonia named for its remarkable sun-responsive leaf coloration — soli-mutata meaning "changed by the sun" — whose deeply textured, pustulated leaf surface shifts from deep olive-bronze in lower light to rich chestnut-brown under stronger exposure, a dynamic color response that makes the plant look different depending on where and how it is grown. The leaves are broadly rounded, heavily puckered and blistered across the entire surface, and carried in the low, spreading, creeping rhizome habit characteristic of the rhizomatous begonia group. The RHS Award of Garden Merit recognizes it as an outstanding ornamental, and the variegated form adds cream to silver mottling across that already complex textured surface for additional visual interest.
- Light: Bright indirect light to dappled shade; stronger light intensifies the chestnut-brown sun-reactive coloration while lower light keeps leaves deeper olive-green. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the puckered leaf surface.
- Soil: Light, well-draining mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark; rhizomatous begonias are highly susceptible to root rot and require excellent aeration and drainage.
- Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; humidity of 50-70% supports the best leaf texture and cleanest growth. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
- Watering: Allow the top 2" of medium to dry between waterings; rhizomatous begonias are more drought-tolerant than other begonia types and far more susceptible to overwatering than underwatering. Water at the base — wet foliage promotes powdery mildew.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop feeding in winter. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas which promote leggy growth at the expense of the characteristic leaf coloration.
