Anthurium Flavolineatum

A rarely seen and quietly captivating species from the cloud forests of southern Colombia and Ecuador, Anthurium flavolineatum is one of those collector's plants that earns devoted admirers not through drama or flashy variegation, but through sheer botanical elegance. Its leaves are extraordinarily elongated and deeply lobed with a prominent sinus, carried on long, slender petioles that give the whole plant a graceful, airy quality unlike most anthuriums. The leaf surface is thin and nearly matte — almost sub-velvety to the touch — emerging in bright green on juvenile leaves before maturing to a softer, more glaucous tone as they elongate and develop their full form. Typically found growing on or near the forest floor at higher elevations, it prefers slightly cooler conditions than many of its tropical relatives and rewards a stable, humid environment with steady, elegant growth. Seldom seen for sale outside specialist nurseries, it is one of the more distinctive species-level anthuriums available to serious collectors.

  • Light: Bright indirect light to dappled shade. No direct sun — a forest floor species adapted to filtered light. Early morning or late afternoon sun is acceptable but midday sun will scorch the thin leaf surface.
  • Water: Keep soil lightly damp — not wet or soggy. Water once or twice a week during active growth, reducing to once weekly in winter. Good drainage is essential. More forgiving than velvety collector anthuriums but still sensitive to waterlogging.
  • Humidity: 60-70% preferred. Tolerates 50% with some margin but thrives with more ambient moisture. A humidifier is recommended for consistent results, especially in climate-controlled environments.
  • Soil: Open, well-draining epiphytic mix — orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or sphagnum moss. Can be grown as a near-epiphyte in a very chunky medium. Avoid dense or compacting soils.
  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength every 2-4 weeks during active growth. Light feeder — consistent low-level nutrition is preferable to heavy irregular feeding. Reduce in winter.
  • Temperature: Prefers slightly cooler conditions than most anthuriums — 60-78°F (15-26°C) ideal. Found naturally at higher elevations, so tolerates and even appreciates a cooler range. Keep above 55°F. No cold drafts.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals causing irritation and swelling of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
