Philodendron Red Congo Variegated
Philodendron 'Red Congo' (variegated)
A variegated cultivar of Philodendron 'Red Congo' — a self-heading hybrid grown for its upright, non-vining habit and broad, glossy paddle-shaped leaves. New leaves emerge in deep copper-red tones before maturing to dark red-green, with prominent red petioles throughout. The variegated form layers cream, pale yellow, and blush-pink sectors and marbling across the deep red-green surface, producing multiple simultaneous color tones on a single leaf. As a self-heading hybrid it grows upright from a central rosette without climbing and requires no moss pole.
-
Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the variegation and richest color expression; insufficient light causes progressive greening and loss of the multi-tonal palette. Avoid direct sun which scorches the lighter sectors.
-
Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir in a wide pot; excellent drainage essential. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-82°F; humidity of 50-65% suits it well — more tolerant of average household conditions than many collector aroids.
-
Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Never waterlog.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce in winter.
