Ceratostema Pendens

A pendent epiphytic shrub in the Ericaceae (blueberry family), described by Luteyn and endemic to the cloud forests of Morona-Santiago province, Ecuador, where it grows in the wet tropical biome at montane elevations. It belongs to the informal "auriculatum group" — species with a long-pendant habit whose amplexicaul, cordate leaves partially enclose the flowers. It produces unusual waxy, tubular hanging flowers with a dark maroon-red corolla followed by translucent cream berries, growing from a well-developed lignotuber. Best displayed where its pendant flowers can be appreciated; never remove spent peduncles.

  • Light: Bright filtered indirect light; protect from harsh direct sun to prevent leaf scorching.

  • Soil: Open, acidic epiphytic mix of orchid bark and perlite, or mounted with sphagnum; excellent drainage essential. Use rainwater or distilled water if tap water is hard.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Cool to intermediate — daytime 68-86°F with a beneficial nighttime drop to 50-60°F to encourage blooming; high humidity of 60%+ is essential, with good airflow.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer of the mix feels dry; keep consistently moist but never waterlogged to prevent root rot.

  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly with a low-pH ericaceous formula during active growth; sensitive to fertilizer salt buildup. Reduce in winter.
