Monstera Albo
Monstera deliciosa 'Albo Variegata'

The plant that arguably ignited the modern rare aroid collecting craze, the Monstera Albo remains one of the most recognizable and coveted variegated houseplants in the world. Its large, fenestrated leaves are dramatically splashed with crisp, bright white — appearing as bold sectors, sweeping half-moons, delicate marbling, and occasional fully white leaves that emerge ghostly pale against deep green. The contrast is stark and architectural in a way that no other Monstera quite replicates. Variegation is chimeric, arising from a spontaneous genetic mutation rather than a stable tissue-culture origin, which means every leaf is unpredictable and every plant is genuinely unique. This instability is part of what keeps the Albo so compelling — and so challenging. The white tissue contains no chlorophyll, making it more fragile than green growth and demanding more attentive care. A plant that rewards patience and expertise with one of the most spectacular displays in the aroid world.

  • Light: Bright indirect light essential. White sectors depend on adequate light for the plant to generate sufficient energy for healthy growth. Insufficient light causes reversion toward green. No direct sun — white tissue scorches almost instantly.
  • Water: Water when top 1-2" of medium is dry. Impeccable drainage is non-negotiable. Never allow roots to sit in standing water — root rot is the most common way this plant is lost.
  • Humidity: 65%+ preferred. White sectors are acutely prone to browning and tissue breakdown in dry air. A dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended. Keep away from all dry air sources.
  • Soil: Very chunky aroid mix — coarse orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Avoid any moisture-retentive soils. Provide a moss pole or trellis from an early stage for climbing support and larger mature leaf development.
  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 2-4 weeks during growing season. Avoid excess nitrogen — promotes green growth at the expense of white variegation. Do not remove all green tissue — it powers the plant's energy production. Reduce in winter.
  • Temperature: 65-85°F. Keep above 55°F. White sectors blacken and collapse rapidly under cold stress — keep well away from cold windows and AC drafts.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals causing irritation and swelling of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings below a node with aerial root, rooted in water or sphagnum moss. Chimeric variegation means cutting coloration is unpredictable — a cutting from a heavily white section may revert toward green, or produce entirely different patterning. Most collectors wait until a robust specimen is established before cutting.
