Philodendron Jose Buono × Dark Billietiae
Philodendron 'Jose Buono' × Philodendron billietiae (dark form)

A hybrid that pairs two of the most visually commanding climbing philodendrons in the collector trade — two plants whose individual identities are defined by very different but equally striking characteristics, and whose cross produces something that carries both simultaneously. Philodendron 'Jose Buono', the large variegated cultivar of uncertain hybrid origin from the tropical forests of Central and South America and the Caribbean, is defined by its impressive scale — elongated, broadly ovate to lanceolate leaves reaching 50cm or more on climbing specimens — and its bold, painterly cream, white, and yellow variegation splashed unpredictably across a deep green ground, with every leaf producing a completely unrepeatable pattern. Philodendron billietiae dark form, the dark-selected clone of the Brazilian and Guyanese species, contributes the character that makes the billietiae lineage so immediately recognizable from across a room: the extraordinary bright orange to golden-yellow petioles, among the most saturated and unusual petiole coloration in the entire genus, here in the darker selection paired with a particularly rich and deep green leaf. The cross synthesizes these two visual personalities — the elongated, lanceolate leaf form and vivid orange petiole character from the billietiae parent meeting the large-scale leaf presence and unpredictable cream variegation from Jose Buono — producing a climbing hybrid with elongated, generously sized leaves carried on orange-tinted petioles and marked with the bold cream and green variegation of the Jose Buono lineage. The combination of the vivid orange petioles against the cream-and-green variegated leaves is a color interplay that few other plants in cultivation can replicate. As with all chimeric variegated crosses, individual seedling expression varies considerably in both the degree and pattern of variegation.

A tall moss pole or climbing support is essential — both parents are vigorous climbers and the hybrid produces progressively larger, more dramatically colored leaves as it ascends. Bright indirect light is the most critical care variable for maintaining the chimeric variegation — the cream and yellow sectors require more light than fully green tissue to sustain the same metabolic function, and insufficient light causes progressive reversion toward green over time. Avoid direct harsh sun, which scorches the chlorophyll-poor sectors. Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Humidity of 60-70% supports the best leaf quality and color expression. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-82°F. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
