Philodendron Pastazanum Red Point

A selected form of Philodendron pastazanum — the Ecuadorian terrestrial creeper from the Pastaza province — distinguished by a temporary pink to reddish coloration at the point where each new leaf meets the petiole, a vibrant flash of color on emergent growth that gives the cultivar its name. It retains the species' large, broadly heart-shaped leaves with their deeply corrugated, glossy green texture and strongly impressed venation. A terrestrial rhizome creeper that spreads horizontally rather than climbing — wide, shallow containers suit it best.

  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves. Good light supports the largest leaves and most defined vein texture.

  • Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir in a wide, shallow container; the rhizome should sit at or just above the soil surface.

  • Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 68-85°F, never below 60°F; humidity of 60%+ is preferred — higher levels promote larger, healthier leaves.

  • Watering: Allow the top 1-2" of medium to dry between waterings; water thoroughly and drain completely. Sensitive to overwatering — never waterlog.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for best leaf quality. Reduce in winter.
