Born from Innovation in South Korean Nurseries

Alocasia 'Venom' emerged around 2019 as a spontaneous mutation of the beloved Alocasia amazonica, discovered by Mason Lee at Mason Plants in South Korea. Named after the Marvel character for its dramatic, almost sinister beauty, this cultivar features glossy dark green leaves with striking silvery-white veins that seem to glow against the dark background. The mutation created arrow-shaped foliage with a metallic sheen that captures light in mesmerizing ways, making each leaf appear sculpted rather than grown.

Essential Care

☀️
Light
Bright Indirect · No Direct Sun

Requires bright, filtered light to maintain its dramatic coloration and prevent scorching. Direct sunlight will fade the distinctive dark green color and burn the glossy leaves.

  • Ideal: East/west windows with sheer curtains
  • Distance: 3-6 feet from bright windows
  • Avoid: Direct afternoon sun, deep shade
💧
Water
Evenly Moist · Sensitive Roots

Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings — typically every 5-7 days depending on humidity and season.

Water when top inch feels dry to touch. Ensure excellent drainage as standing water quickly causes root rot in this sensitive cultivar.

🌡️
Temperature
Warm & Stable · 65-85°F

Temperatures between 65 to 85°F (18 to 29°C) provide optimal conditions. Avoid temperatures below 60°F and protect from cold drafts that stress the plant.

Consistent warmth is crucial — temperature fluctuations cause leaf drop and stunted growth. Use heating mats in winter if necessary.

💦
Humidity
High 60-80% · Essential for Health

Appreciates 60–80% humidity for optimal leaf quality and growth. Most UK homes sit at 30–50%, so supplementation is usually needed.

Use humidifiers, pebble trays, or group with other plants. Low humidity causes crispy edges and smaller new leaves.

🪴
Soil & Potting
Aerated Aroid Mix · Excellent Drainage

A chunky, well-draining aroid mix is ideal. Orchid bark, perlite, maybe some charcoal creates the perfect balance of drainage and aeration.

Mix: Equal parts orchid bark, perlite, coco coir. Add charcoal for extra drainage and root health.

🌱
Fertilizer
Light & Regular · Growing Season

Feed with a balanced plant feed at regular intervals during spring through fall. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Use diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Overfertilising causes more problems than underfeeding.
