Platycerium bifurcatum
Polypodiaceae · Australian Rainforests · Unique Epiphyte
Essential Care
Thrives in bright, filtered light that mimics dappled forest canopy conditions. Direct sunlight will scorch the delicate fronds, while too little light stunts growth and reduces the distinctive forked shape.
- Best: East or west windows with sheer curtains
- Distance: 3-5 feet from bright windows
- Avoid: Direct afternoon sun, deep shade
Water by thoroughly soaking both the growing medium and the basal shield fronds, as this fern absorbs moisture through its fronds. Allow some drying between waterings to prevent root rot.
Method: Soak in sink or shower weekly, drain well. Use rainwater when possible. More water in summer, less in winter.
Prefers consistent temperatures above 55°F with ideal range of 65-80°F. Can tolerate brief drops to 40°F but should be protected from frost and freezing.
Move indoors before nighttime temperatures drop into the 40s. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes that stress the plant.
Benefits from moderate to high humidity but less demanding than tropical houseplants. Good air circulation prevents fungal issues while maintaining moisture levels.
Use humidity trays, grouping, or occasional misting. Bathrooms with bright light provide ideal conditions naturally.
Mount on wooden boards, tree fern slabs, or wire baskets lined with sphagnum moss. Secure with fishing line over the brown shield fronds, never the green fertile fronds.
Medium: Sphagnum moss, tree fern fiber, or coconut husk for root attachment. Excellent drainage is critical for health.
Feed monthly during warmer months with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer applied to both the growing medium and fronds. Reduce or stop feeding in winter.
Alternative: Place slow-release fertilizer pellets in the mounting medium. Less is more — overfertilizing causes more problems than underfeeding.
