Alocasia Frydek 'Tattoo'
Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek Tattoo'
A rare mutant cultivar of Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek' — the Green Velvet Alocasia — that takes the dark velvety arrow-shaped leaves and bold white venation of the standard Frydek and adds irregular silvery-grey to cream markings and mottling across the surface, giving the "tattooed" effect the name references. Also circulating as 'Emerald Tide', its most textural expression shows deeply undulating, ruffled leaf margins and distinctive patterning on the leaf underside. Propagated through tissue culture and subject to the dormancy typical of the genus.
-
Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the deepest leaf coloration, venation contrast, and tattoo markings; insufficient light causes fading. Avoid direct sun which scorches the velvet surface.
-
Soil: Well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage is non-negotiable — as a rhizomatous alocasia it is highly susceptible to root rot. Never waterlogged.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; cool below 60°F triggers dormancy. High humidity of 60-70% supports the best velvet texture and cleanest leaf emergence.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings. Never waterlog; overwatering is the primary cultivation failure.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy. A formula with added calcium supports the best leaf quality.
