Alocasia Loco Alocasia 'Loco'
A compact hybrid introduced by Deroose Plants of Florida in 2010, understood to be a somaclonal mutation of Alocasia 'Mandalay' from the A. sanderiana × A. longiloba 'Watsoniana' lineage. It nearly disappeared from the market before being reintroduced through tissue culture in 2023. Grown for its sculptural, deep green, glossy leaves with ruffled, undulating margins, deltoid form, and bold white venation — with a curled, folded, puckered leaf character treated as a stable genetic trait. Compact at 30-50cm and subject to the dormancy typical of the genus.

Light: Bright indirect light maintains the strongest venation and leaf character; avoid direct sun which scorches the leaves. An east- or north-facing window is ideal.

Soil: Chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and root aeration are essential — root rot is the primary cultivation failure. Never waterlogged.

Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-85°F; cool below 60°F can trigger dormancy. High humidity of 60%+ supports the best growth — brown crispy edges signal air too dry.

Watering: Allow the top 1-2" to dry between waterings; keep lightly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the primary cultivation failure — when in doubt, underwater. Reduce in winter.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; reduce or stop during dormancy.

The plant arrived happy and healthy. Only 1 leaf any imperfections which probably happened in shipping. It has a large new leaf unfurling that looks pretty variegated. Excited to see what it ends up looking like. The plant itself is bigger than I expected. From the posted pictures I was thinking I’d get something with 3-5 leafs, mine has 8. Would definitely purchase a plant from here again and would definitely recommend. The Stanley behind it is a 30oz one and it’s taller than it, for size reference
