Goebel's Tassel Fern
(Phlegmariurus goebellii)

A graceful and architecturally refined epiphytic clubmoss from the forests of Southeast Asia, Phlegmariurus goebellii — formerly classified within Huperzia and still widely sold under that name — is one of the more elegantly pendulous members of the tassel fern group. Its long, rope-like stems cascade in dense, richly green curtains of tightly overlapping scale-like leaves, tapering to slender fertile tips that give the plant its characteristic tassel-like appearance at the ends of each hanging branch. In the wild it clings to mossy tree branches in humid montane forests, drawing moisture from the surrounding air and debris rather than from soil — a growth habit that makes it ideally suited to hanging basket display indoors, where its cascading form can be appreciated fully. A slow grower by nature, it rewards patient, consistent care with increasingly full and dramatic cascades over time.

As a true epiphyte, this species demands exceptional drainage and excellent airflow to the roots — pure sphagnum moss, a coarse orchid bark and perlite mix, or a mounted cork setup are all appropriate; standard potting soil is entirely unsuitable. High humidity of 60-80% is critical and best maintained with a dedicated humidifier or enclosed growing environment. Keep the medium consistently and evenly moist but never saturated — brief dry-downs between waterings are far preferable to waterlogging, which causes rapid root rot. Provide bright indirect light; direct sun scorches the delicate foliage. Maintain cool to intermediate temperatures between 55-72°F — as a montane species it appreciates and tolerates notably cooler conditions than most tropical houseplants, and high heat causes rapid decline. Non-toxic to humans and pets.
