Philodendron Fibrosum × Verrucosum 'Monkey Tail'

A hybrid combining two philodendrons known for their fuzzy, hairy petioles — P. fibrosum, which produces dense fibrous hairs along its petioles, and P. verrucosum 'Monkey Tail', a selection valued for particularly bristly, hair-covered petioles. The cross emphasizes this shared trait, pairing the tactile fuzzy-petiole character of both parents with large, velvety heart-shaped leaves and contrasting venation. New growth carries warm emergent tones, and the undersides may show a reddish flush from the verrucosum lineage. A climber that develops larger, fuller leaves with vertical support.

• Light: Bright indirect light for the deepest velvet coloration and best vein contrast; avoid direct sun which bleaches the velvet surface.

• Soil: Chunky, moisture-retentive but well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; excellent drainage and aeration essential. Never waterlogged.

• Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80% is essential — the verrucosum parent raises the humidity requirement, with edge browning the first sign of dry air.

• Watering: Allow the top inch of medium to approach dryness between waterings; keep consistently moist but never soggy. Never waterlog.

• Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks during active growth; supplement with calcium and magnesium for best leaf quality. Reduce in winter.
